INTRODUCING HQ AT BRIGHTON DOME
BRIGHTON FESTIVAL'S VERY OWN POP-UP SOCIAL CLUB
The 44th Brighton Festival runs Saturday 1- Sunday 23 May 2010

With creative icon and inspiring thinker Brian Eno at the helm as Guest Artistic Director, Brighton Festival 2010 has more than ever; 242 performances, 16 exclusives, 14 premieres, and 8 Brighton Festival commissions from internationally acclaimed artists visiting the UK for the first time, as well as Brighton-based artists making waves on the world scene. A highlight of the international cultural calendar, this year it boasts some serious style credentials with the crash-landing of HQ at Brighton Dome.

HQ at Brighton Dome comprises: a spectacular installation by Gary Card, a daytime canteen featuring a fresh and seasonal menu by Bistrotheque, and a programme of performance, that could coerce you to rent a beach house.

INSTALLATION

Commissioned by Brighton Festival, set designer Gary Card has created a 3D floating collage featuring shards of transparent acrylic to form a sharp-faceted abstract chandelier, backlit by the existing skylight to create a stained glass window effect.

Card is a young Londoner on the rise having just designed his own line of watches for Swatch, regularly contributing to NY Times T Magazine having shot with Paolo Roversi and Sølve Sundsbø, and currently immersed in Lady Gaga's new music video, as well as being himself a focus of Levi's latest ad campaign. He was also the artist behind the winter fantasy installation for Bistrotheque's 3-day Christmas feast, Patrón Silver Reindeer last December.

An adept illustrator, Card has also been invited by West Sussex brewery Dark Star, to design a limited edition bottle, which will be on sale exclusively at Brighton Festival 2010.

DAYTIME CANTEEN

At HQ's daytime canteen guests will enjoy a dedicated fresh and seasonal menu featuring local Sussex ingredients, designed by London's East End eateryBistrotheque. Chef Tom Collins has created a choice of salads - smoked trout, fennel, avocado, chipotle, and black bean; soups - sweetcorn chowder; sandwiches - smoked salmon, dill, capers, and sour cream; hot dishes - squid, tomato and red pepper stew with white polenta, as well as a choice of tacos - sea bass, black beans, avocado, and chipotle, and cakes that include chocolate and raspberry.

Bistrotheque co-owner David Waddington worked with the Brighton Dome and Festival bars team to put together an imaginative cocktail menu that features many classics reworked exclusively for the 2 bars at HQ, including HQ Bloody Mary and HQ Pimms Cocktail, as well as Hard Pink Lemonade with vodka, pomegranate syrup and atomised aromatic bitters, and HQ Twinkle with Bloomsbury Sussex sparkling wine and St Germaine elderflower liqueur, amongst other sensory concoctions.

Pablo Flack and David Waddington took 6500 sq ft of derelict sweat shop tucked down a cobbled back street somewhere between Bethnal Green and Hackney, and turned it into Bistrotheque. Opening in 2004 to a packed house of local reprobates, fashion's high flyers, the art world's cognoscenti, and the occasional aristocrat, an East End institution was born. Under Head Chef Tom Collins, the kitchen serves a democratic menu inspired by French bistro classics.

JONNY WOO'S MIDNIGHT GAY BINGO - BANK HOLIDAY SUNDAY 2 MAY

East London's cult superstar Jonny Woo presents bingo like you've never seen it before; spoken word, song, dance, and of course points means prizes. Having enjoyed a residency at London's ICA, Gay Bingo has gained a reputation for being one of London's most unpredictable events. An icon of London's East End fashion, performance art and gay scenes, Woo found success with his show 'Night of a Thousand Jay Astons', and solo shows such as 'International Woman of Mr E' have enjoyed sell-out runs in London and Edinburgh. BOURGEOIS & MAURICE - FRIDAY 7 MAY

The musical double act with style as sharp as their wit. Part cabaret, part theatre, part catwalk freakshow, their songs blend unashamedly catchy pop hooks with bitingly satirical lyrics, performed on piano by the effortlessly glamorous femme fatale Maurice Maurice, with Georgeois Bourgeois on vocals. In the past year they have enjoyed sell-out success at both Edinburgh Festival and their debut run in the West End at Soho Theatre, and have performed at: The Queen Elizabeth Hall, Royal Opera House, Royal Academy of Arts, and Bistrotheque.

BISTROTHEQUE SUPPER CLUB WITH BOURGEOIS & MAURICE - SATURDAY 8 MAY

Bistrotheque take over HQ in its entirety to host one of their legendary supper clubs where guests will enjoy a special menu that showcases local produce and celebrates being by the sea, accompanied by the razor sharp double act that is Bourgeois & Maurice who descend upon Brighton with a boatload of new songs, providing after dinner performance and frivolity, a cabaret for the YouTube generation; "21st Century Cabaret stars like no other." Bistrotheque's Flack and Waddington have also produced 2 phenomenally successful temporary restaurants, kick-starting a trend and introducing the UK to the term 'pop-up'. In December 2006, The Reindeer opened its doors on Brick Lane for 23 days. During that time, 13,000 people flooded into the Narnia-esque, snow, forest and log cabin filled dining room. In the adjacent theatre, Kiki and Herb, Mika, and The Tiger Lillies, held the stage for 14,000 theatre go-ers. November 2008 saw FLASH open its doors to similar numbers at Royal Academy of Arts when they moved termporarily from Bethnal Green to Mayfair.

MATTHEW STONE PRESENTS 'HARD FUTURE' - FRIDAY 21 MAY

Artist and shaman Matthew Stone, presents a curated evening of collaborative performance, projections, and classical/electronic body music. Recently placed top of a 'most influential under 30s in the arts' power list compiled by The Sunday Times, art critic and curator Normal Rosenthal compares his energy to that of a young Hirst. His work was recently exhibited simultaneously in galleries in: London, Paris, Copenhagen and Tokyo.

Alex Nikiporenko & Matthew Stone will be presenting a collaborative musical performance. Born and raised in Moscow, Nikiporenko began composing at the age of 7, realising his true passion while studying at Moscow Conservatory’s Junior Department, moving to England at 13, reaching high acclaim as BBC/Guardian Young Composer of the Year in 2008, and last year held the position of Creative in Residence of The Hospital Club in London.

Theo Adams / The Theo Adams Company will present new work stemming from his large-scale multi-disciplinary theatrical production "CRY OUT", which recently premiered in Tokyo, including visuals and projections directed by Matthew Stone. A self-taught, 20 year old director, performer and visionary, Adams recently featured in an epic portfolio shot by David Sims for W Magazine, which said: "Theo Adams and his posse of dancers, musicians and muses has taken London's avant-garde by storm."

Pandora's Jukebox is Yasmina Dexter who will present an exclusive DJ set. Originally from Slovenia, this striking, London based polymath is known for her sexy and distinctive DJ sets, intricate catwalk soundscapes for designers such as Preen and Christopher Kane, and her iconic style, a muse to shoe designer Nicholas Kirkwood. Pandora’s Jukebox crafts her mixes for the catwalk and the dancefloor, hovering somewhere between the seedy sensuality of a Soho strip show and the masked ball scene in ‘Eyes Wide Shut'.

ENDURANCE is the brainchild of producer and DJ Chris Flatline. ENDURANCE will be providing an expert selection of Electronic Body Music, New Beat andAggrepo for the latter half of the night. Chris Flatline will be joined by his resident DJ's Pony-Girl & LVR. Endurance has fast become London’s most interesting new club night. Compared by Vice's Online Fashion Editor Daryoush Haj-Najafi to an early Nag Nag Nag, ENDURANCE rides the crest of the newest wave of cold, hard and industrial beats set to redefine London's club-scene. ENDURANCE recently joined forces with London cult club-legends Cosey to host a room at the ICA.

JUSTIN BOND - SATURDAY 22 MAY

Star of John Cameron Mitchell's Shortbus, and one half of Tony-nominated duo Kiki and Herb, Justin Bond presents a show of original songs combining witchcraft, a punk attitude and neo-folk glamour, promising tears, glitter, and a rollicking good time. Described as one of New York's heroes, he has toured the world, headlining at Carnegie Hall, Sydney Opera House, The South Bank Centre, and has starred both on and off Broadway.
