Miami December 1 , 2009 - January 9 , 2010 The Gallery Emmanuel Perrotin is organizing several exhibitions from December 1st, 2009 to January 9th, 2010 in its Miami space. - An exhibition of emerging and established artists of the actual French scene : Ivan Argote, Lionel Estève, Daniel Firman, Kolkoz, Mathieu Mercier, Xavier Veilhan who will show new and emblematic pieces. - Bernard Frize Oh Happy Days ! Bernard Frize paints in series, those of formal and conceptual musical scores, in which he exhausts the occurences and possibilities. His paintings recall not only the works of Sol Lewitt, who defined the guidelines of his pieces before their fabrication, but also the drippings of Jackson Pollock and the chance involved in his pictorial compositions. A collection of ten major and emblematic works, made between 1980 and 2007, is presented. Bernard Frize divulges the nature of the production of these works ; he tries to escape from the idea of artist as demiurge. Ironically, his minimalist and distinct style is indentifiable at first glance. His paintings have as their subject the technique of painting itself, from their conception to their completion, but are also sensory experiences of color. - Matthew Day Jackson Gezellig Matthew Day Jackson uses his own techniques to develop a multifaceted body of work, including sculptures, installations and paintings, films... In a political gesture, the exhibition handles with precision the art of retrieving different objects and heterogeneous materials, from salvaged wood to high tech equipment from NASA. He effectively alludes to the history of both sculpture, Brancusi in particular, and painting, from Bosch to Reinhardt. Matthew Day Jackson presents among others two monumental paintings entitled Looking Down Yosemite Valley and Donner Lake (2009), each one measuring more than 3 x 4 meters. The pieces are made from the universal material Formica, a symbol of modern comfort, on wood panelling. These works are direct references to not only the German romantic paintings of Caspar David Friedrich, for example, but also to representations of the American West by the painter Albert Bierstadt. The two paintings operate as a backdrop to two sculptures, In Search of the Miraculous and San Fernando Light (one cubic foot) (2009) that are meditations on the idea of exploration. However, throughout human history the land and atmosphere being explored is generally subsumed by the culture and atmosphere of the explorer. This could be thought of as an occupation. - Pharrell Williams, will present his new chair enititled The Tank (2010). After completing the chair Perspective, conceived as a reflection on love, and the sculp- ture The Simple Things, a collaboration with the artist Takashi Murakami, Pharrell Williams tackles the theme of war. How does a sacrificial youth decide to engage in a battle that not seems to be hers ? As part of Art Basel Miami 2009, the Gallery Emmanuel Perrotin will feature the artworks of Chiho Aoshima, Bernard Frize, Gelitin, Duane Hanson, Bharti Kher, Klara Kristalova, Guy Limone, Farhad Moshiri, Jean-Michel Othoniel, Paola Pivi, Piotr Uklanski, Peter Zimmermann and 3 new monumental abstract paintings by Takashi Murakami : Warp, 2009, NGC 2371-2 (Gemini Nebula), 2009 and Treasure Island/Hidden Jewels Of The Mediterranean, 2009... at the G09 booth
